Welcome

Maerdy Windfarm is a permitted eight turbine windfarm at the top of the Rhondda Valleys. The project is due to be built during 2012.

Amendments to deliver up to 40% extra green electricity

By moving the wind turbines back from the valley edge by 140m and raising the height by 20m there is no material change in the visibility of the windfarm. However the slighlty larger turbines can capture up to 40% more energy. There are no additional environmental impacts and several benefits including 25% slower turning blades and improved peat avoidance. An amending planning application has been made to the local council.

Community funds increased

The permitted windfarm has two community funds proposed for Maerdy and Treorchy worth £50,000 / year or a £600,000 lump sum. With the increased energy from the amendments the community funds will be increased by 40% to £70,000 / year or a £840,000 lump sum.

Keep the business rates local !!

At present all the business rates go to central govnerment. However The Westminster government have proposed that local communities should keep business rates from windfarms in their area. The Welsh Assembly Government have not decided whether to follow suit. The business rates are about £190,000 / year. With the amendments this would increase by up to 40% or £260,000 / year. Please join our campaign to get WAG to allow business rates to remain with the local community.

Climate Change

Climate change is "the greatest environmental, economic and social challenge facing the planet" : says the Welsh Assembly Government.

WAG have launched new targets for 20% of all electricity to come from onshore windfarms.
