Community Fund

Total funding of £50,000 pa for the life of the windfarm is proposed. The windfarm is planned to operate for 20-25 years, creating a total fund of between £1million and £1.25million. Alternatively a £600,000 capital sum at the beginning of the windfarm is offered.

If the larger turbines are permitted by the Council and go ahead yielding up to 40% extra energy, then it is proposed to increase the community fund by the same amount to £70,000 pa or £840,000 capital sum.

It is proposed that total funding is split equally between two community funds, one for Maerdy and one for Treorchy. It is proposed that a major part of the funds will be democratically spent. Each resident of the community will have an equal vote on how the funds are spent, rather than a controlling committee. It is hoped this will foster community involvement and interest.

Funding rounds would take place every December, with bids invited and then local residents voting on the bids through public meeting and the community fund website. The first funding rounds will take place in the year of constuction; ie next year, although there may be provision for the Developer to bring this forward to 2011 dependent on project progress.

Expressions of interest are invited now so we may contact you in advance of the first round of funding.

Consultation

REP consulted on the community fund proposals in 2006 and received support for the concepts and principles.

Beneficiaries

The communities of Maerdy and Treorchy will direct the expenditure of the funds, but it is not necessary that all the funds are spent in Maerdy and Treorchy. Worthy proposals may come from anywhere, that the residents value.
