Other Parts of the Windfarm

Electricity from the turbines is carried through underground cables back to a substation. The substation is a single storey building with some outside electrical equipment similar to that seen in small substations in urban areas. It is likely that the substation will be located next to existing forestry at the western edge of the site. The building will be made from sympathetic local materials. It may be possible to screen the building further by planting some additional conifers around the building.

The turbines would be linked with a stone track. Initially this is 5m wide to allow the large cranes that erect the turbines to gain access. The track is widened at the foot of each turbine to provide a pad for the crane to work. After the turbines are erected the track is reduced back to a single lane width adequate for a maintenance van to use.

From the substation the electricity generated from the windfarm is distributed to the local electricity grid using overhead wooden pole electricity lines. The lines are similar to existing ones around the area, such as the example below. The line would be located to reduce visibility; skirting the edges of forestry, following existing electrical line, etc..

As well as the turbines there would also be a thin mast to measure the wind called an anemometer mast. This would be approximately 50m high, but thin and difficult to see from a distance.
